Speaking to the International Coal and Climate Summit, organized by the Polish government and the World Coal Association, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Christiana Figueres said the coal industry can and must radically transform and diversify to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
Directly addressing the CEOs of major coal companies, Figueres said, "Let me be clear from the outset that my joining you today is neither a tacit approval of coal use, nor is it a call for the immediate disappearance of coal. But I am here to say that coal must change rapidly and dramatically for everyone's sake."

The Los Angeles Times reported today that a volcano may be stirring more than a half-mile beneath a major ice sheet in Antarctica, raising the possibility of faster base melting that could ultimately affect climate.

Seismologists working in a mountainous area of Marie Byrd Land in western Antarctica detected a swarm of low-magnitude earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 similar to those that can precede volcanic eruptions, according to a study published online Sunday in Nature Geoscience.

Deciding the contentious net metering issue, a rate case with national implications, the Arizona Corporation Commission ruled Nov. 14 that Arizona Public Service Co., a utility, can charge a rate of 70 cents per kilowatt to customers who install rooftop solar panels after Jan. 1, 2014. APS sought a far higher rate, and solar power interests countered that the company was trying to kill the state's solar industry because it feared the competition. APS argued solar customers shift power costs for lines, repairs, etc. to non-solar customers. The decision was a partial victory for both sides

The city of Shreveport, La., recently agreed to make significant upgrades to reduce overflows from its sanitary sewer system and pay a $650,000 civil penalty to resolve Clean Water Act violations stemming from illegal discharges of raw sewage, the U.S. Department of Justice and EPA announced. The state of Louisiana, a co-plaintiff in the case, will receive half of the civil penalty.
