The bipartisan bill passed in the Senate by a 81-18 vote and now heads to the House, where Speaker John Boehner has said it will not be blocked. Once the legislation clears both chambers, it will go to President Obama for his signature. The narrow package includes a stopgap measure that would fund the government through Jan. 15, suspend the debt ceiling until Feb. 7 and establish a framework for formal budget negotiations to begin. A stalemate in Congress over the budget and the Affordable Care Act led to the 16-day partial government shutdown and has pushed the government close to an Oct. 17 debt ceiling deadline. |
