California Ports Ready for At-Berth Regulation

Years of work have gone into constructing the shore power infrastructure needed to comply with the California Air Resources Board's "Airborne Toxic Control Measure for Auxiliary Diesel Engines Operated on Ocean-Going Vessels At-Berth in a California Port," known as the At-Berth Regulation, which requires that at least half of all container ships berthed at the ports to shut down their diesel engines and run on shore-side electricity beginning Jan. 1, 2014. It applies to the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Hueneme.

Burning shale gas in power plants instead of coal reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but there is a hidden climate change impact to America's fracking boom: the unleashing of a "tidal wave" of construction or expansion of more than 90 chemical, fertilizer, and petroleum plants that will release about as much greenhouse gas pollution as 21 large baseload coal-fired power plants, according to a major new report from the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP).

The memorandum President Obama signed Dec. 5 that directs the federal government to consume 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020, more than double the current level, is a welcome move, said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO, and founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council said in a statement posted by the organization.

INTERPOL has issued a Purple Notice asking its member countries to assist New Zealand, Australia, and Norway in finding a vessel suspected of significant illegal fishing - possibly more than $60 million worth since it was blacklisted by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources in February 2006.
