Overview:
Hydraulic fracturing has been used for close to 50 years. Coupled with directional drilling, it is the key technological advance responsible for the oil and gas "boom" occurring in many basins across the United States.
This presentation describes the background for the 2010 NIOSH Field Effort to Assess Chemical Exposures in Oil and Gas Workers, which was initiated to assess the occupational health risks for unconventional oil and gas extraction workers. After taking full-shift exposure assessments at hydraulic fracturing sites in five states, NIOSH determined that exposures to respirable crystalline silica (quartz) exceeded OSHA, NIOSH, and ACGIH criteria -- in some cases by a factor of ten or more. NIOSH developed a variety of recommendations to control workplace silica exposures, including a patent-pending technology to control dust emissions from large sand moving machinery.
Speaker:
Eric Esswein is a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service where he holds the rank of Captain. Eric serves as a senior industrial hygienist at CDC/NIOSH where he has worked for more than 22 years. Eric's primary research focus is field-based, industrial hygiene exposure assessments in oil and gas extraction as part of the NIOSH Field Effort to Assess Chemical Exposure Risks for Oil and Gas Workers which he begin in 2010.
Eric earned bachelor and master's degrees in environmental health/toxicology and public health/industrial hygiene and is board certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene. He is the first named inventor for two patents in the area of chemical detection and decontamination which have been commercialized and sold nationally and internationally.
Sponsors:
Draeger
As a global leader in safety technology, Dräger continually develops some of the industry's most innovative technologies to protect, support, and save lives. Technology for industrial safety should protect workers in a way that preserves uninterrupted productivity, so customers can sustain a higher level of profitability without compromising safety. This is technology at its finest. This is Technology for Life.
Clothes Cleaning Systems
The Tempest Windraft System of dust removal and decontamination is the quickest and most effective method to remove the dust from a worker's clothing while they remain fully clothed and wearing their PPE. SK Bowling, the parent company of Clothes Cleaning Systems (CCS), teamed up with The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Unimin Corp to develop a dust removal system suitable for industrial applications.
TSI Inc.
TSI provides a complete portfolio of dependable, real-time instruments for work area and personal exposure monitoring, respirator fit testing, indoor air quality and ventilation testing, to reduce risk to health hazards in a wide variety of work environments.
A Q&A session will be held during the last 15 minutes of the Webinar.
